Over the last year, I’ve participated in the inaugural Complicating the Narratives Fellowship through the Solutions Journalism Network. This fellowship educated me on solutions journalism methodology and allowed me to focus my attention on a story impacting communities nationwide—gun violence.

A belated honeymoon took my wife and me across the Atlantic to Italy for two weeks this spring. I hadn’t been to Italy in over a decade and was craving the food, history, and art.

Throughout January, I worked on a story that involved tense county board meeting(s) and various portraits to showcase the tension in Ottawa County. The images were a part of the story titled “In a thriving Michigan county, a community goes to war with itself” for The Washington Post.

It has been a month since I was in Chicago covering the historic election night of the city’s newest mayor.

I’ll be sharing stories from the past years that have had an impact on me and also showcase some early work as a photojournalist. The first story showcases images from a story focused on decontaminating “meth houses.”

Showcasing this pulled pork sandwich involved creating a motion gif and hero images of a rather stunning sandwich in the studio.

Mateo Bank’s official music video for the song “Psalm 14” was a revitalizing project to work on and pushed my creativity through collaboration.

For Aeris Surgical, I utilized haze, gelled lights, and an industrial environment to create their modern corporate headshots.

Two recent performances are showcased in this update. The images featured come from opera scenes at Saint Mary’s College and “Junie B. Jones The Musical, Jr.” at the South Bend Civic Theatre.

Product photography requires attention to detail, quality/consistent light, and a clear understanding of the use of the images. I worked with a long-time client and friend at Freer's Corner, a boutique candle company that makes beeswax candles.

Live theatre is magic—the environment is reshaped, people morph, and viewers travel to new locations and experiences through time and space. Photographing live theatre draws on my ability to anticipate and react in order to create evocative and storytelling imagery for my clients.

Utilizing a gif vs. a static image amplifies the message that this meal is the sum of many parts. In addition, for this bowl of ramen, the viewer goes along for a visual ride as the pieces are placed one by one.

It was a year of change and growth. From a solo gallery to travel articles, the work allowed me to showcase my photographic style and expand into new areas and develop new relationships. Take a look at some of my favorite images from 2022.

It was a privilege to photograph my grandmother over the holidays. We kept things pretty simple with just one off-camera flash, but we were able to create a few different looks in her apartment.
