Turning the Tide on Gun Violence for Belt Magazine

I think you have to imagine, sometimes just a little bit differently, because we’ve been dealing with something that’s not working for decades.
— Steven Jackson

Over the last year, I’ve participated in the inaugural Complicating the Narratives Fellowship through the Solutions Journalism Network. This fellowship educated me on solutions journalism methodology and allowed me to focus my attention on a story impacting communities nationwide—gun violence.

Last week, a story that I wrote and photographed was published in Belt Magazine, which aims to “challenge simplistic national narratives by paying local journalists, writers, photographers, and poets to cover their communities with depth, context, and the kind of rich insight that can only come from a deep relationship with a place.” This article explores the work being done by various organizations in three communities in Michigan and Indiana to reduce gun violence.
