Effective Event Photography | South Bend, Indiana

What makes high-quality event photography?

From church services to centennial celebrations, I’ve covered a myriad of events.

Even though the motivations, size, time of year, and other details for the events vary, there are commonalities across the board that create high-quality imagery:

  • Every event space is different, but technical proficiency is a must. Additionally, a strong understanding of off-camera lighting can elevate a dark scene into something more visually interesting. These two factors ensure that every client receives high-quality images that showcase the event accurately!

  • Creativity is a must in event photography. A skilled event photographer will go beyond the standard images and highlight creative angles and perspectives. This adds an artistic touch and offers a uniqueness that others may not see.

  • Storytelling is at the core of high-quality event photography. This means that the images capture the feel of the event. This can mean moments of emotion or highlighting the atmosphere of the experience. The goal of storytelling imagery is to show what it was like to be at that event.

  • Being able to adapt and maneuver in the changing environment of an event is highly important. From changing lighting conditions to weather to shifts in schedule, a skilled event photographer will make the necessary adjustments promptly to ensure coverage continues throughout the event.

  • Finally, a vital component of an effective event is a clear understanding of the event’s purpose. Depending on the occasion, an experienced event photographer will come with questions.

    Basic questions:

    • What is the schedule of events?

    • How many people will be in attendance?

    • Are there any key people that need to be photographed?

    • Are there any surprises throughout the schedule of events?

    • Do I need to expedite any images for a social post?

Every event is unique, and photographers will have different methods for documenting an event. For clients, the key is to find a photographer that matches the style they are looking for while possessing the knowledge to be able to deliver no matter the situation.

What does high-quality event photography cost?

The cost can vary, depending on several factors, including the type of the event, the duration, the expected coverage, the deliverables (number of images), expedited images, production (off-camera lights, etc), and others. Some photographers prefer to work with a flat fee, and others will charge per hour or have packages with specific deliverables.

Event photographers have a broad range in their pricing. I’ve seen anywhere from $100 an hour (for photographing and editing time) to $500 an hour (with more production and, often, a second photographer assisting).

When hiring a photographer, it is essential to remember that it isn’t solely about cost. It is about the photographer’s skills, style, and reputation in the community. Make sure to review portfolios and engage with the photographer before booking.
